- KEVIN DAVIS
Trenton Central -- Mid-Distance A seven-time Mercer County champion, Kevin Davis was one of the most dynamic and accomplished middle-to-long-distance scholastic runners in Central Jersey history. A three-season track standout who took county titles in cross country, the 4x400 and 1,600, Davis was at his toughest in the 800 meters, where he staged epic duels with future U.S. Olympian John Marshall of Plainfield in 1980 and 1981. So talented was Davis that he shared the 1981 Group IV state 800-meter title with the Plainfield paragon, earning co-NJ Athlete of the Year status. But Davis’ success wasn’t limited to his senior year in high school, where he was a four-time Central Jersey Group IV champ. The 1980 AAU 1,600-meter champ for both New Jersey and the Eastern region, he reached the national final. Then at Villanova University, he got to team with his ex-rival Marshall as well as international standout Marcus O’Sullivan to lead the Wildcats to several Big East and IC4A crowns from 1981 through 1985. Davis (far right) as part of Villanova's Penn Relays Champion 4x800m Relay in 1984 Davis’ most spectacular moment may have come in 1984 when he ran the lead leg of Villanova’s winning College 4x800 at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. After gaining his bachelor’s and masters degrees at Villanova, he earned his PhD from Rutgers University Newark, and became a perennial mainstay on the Mercer County track scene becoming an NJSIAA official at local and state events and the middle-distance coach for the esteemed Trenton Track Club. - MERRELL NODEN
The Lawrenceville School --Distance The incredible legacy of Merrell Noden is arguably the most multi-dimensional of any member of the Mercer County Track and Field Hall of Fame, one that not only was international but transcends his death to cancer in 2015. An outstanding track and field writer and reporter, Noden contributed to Sports Illustrated from 1986 through 1999 interviewing legendary runners like Frank Shorter and Roger Bannister. As a collegiate, he ran cross country at Princeton University (where he graduated summa cum laude) and was a successful decathlete as a graduate student at Oxford University. There he met his wife Eva and he later returned to the Princeton area to play CIcero in an undergraduate production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. He later coached track and cross country at Princeton Day School and taught Shakespeare to inmates at Trenton State Prison. On the track he was part of one of the greatest indoor seasons in Mercer County history in 1973, when his 4:11.9 anchor leg helped the Lawrenceville School set a national scholastic record. That same season, Noden ran a best of 1:54 for 880 yards and 9:07 for two miles, giving him the rare distinction of ranking in the top five in New Jersey in the three longest distance races. That greatness lives on through the New York based Merrell Noden Track Club, formed in his memory in 2018 and coached by his friend Joe Bolster, a fitting tribute to a track figure whose excellence and imagination knew no bounds. - This Day in Mercer Track History -- April 13, 1991
Published 4/13/2026 35 years ago on April 13, 1991 , The Steinert Boys Track Team took first place at the Spartan Relays. Steinert's razor thin 1 point victory came by way of a calculated coaching risk implemented by Steinert Head Track Coach Doug Martin. Coach Doug Martin Steinert pushed its own squad to the maximum with many of its athletes running multiple races in a short time span within the meet schedule. As reported in the Trenton Times the next day: Trenton Times April 14, 1991 Steinert picked up big points in the 400m Hurdles relay with the Spartan trio of Jim Kolovos, Jim Tymon and Gary Springer grabbing the gold. Steinert's Javelin Relay team of Nick Kutovy (Mercer Hall of fame Class 2025) and Dave Adam got another win. The Spartans also won the Pole Vault Relay, and picked up additional support points by placing in several other relays on the track and in the field. Their well-rounded team effort set up the last race of the day which settled the final score--the 4x400 (1600m Relay). Steinert's 4x4 quartet of Tymon, Mike Gill, Mike Keller and Springer stepped up to get the win and clinch the meet. Trenton Times April 14, 1991 The final scores were as follows: Trenton Times April 14, 1991 Steinert's winning Coach Doug Martin (Retired) will be inducted into the Mercer County Track and Field Hall of Fame this upcoming May 17th when the hall holds its annual induction banquet.
