Princeton High School – Sprinter & Jumper

Princeton’s James A. Mitchell was an all-around sprinter and jumper.  He was back to back State Champion in the 440 Yard Dash in 1932 & 1933.


As just a freshman at the 1932 Class B State Meet, Mitchell won gold in a class record 51 2/5 seconds.


The next year at the state meet Mitchell again earned a gold in the 440 in Group 2, and took a silver in the Long Jump.


Mitchell also dominated at the Sectional Championships.  In 1932 a he won the Central Jersey Broad Jump crown and finished 2nd in the 220 and 3rd in the 100.   In 1933 won the CJ 440 title and scored 2nd in the Broad Jump.  In 1934 he got a double-win taking 1st in the 220 and the Broad Jump. He helped PHS take home the team title all 3 years.



Mitchell was the only double winner at the inaugural outdoor Mercer County Championship in 1934.  He won the 220 and the Broad Jump as PHS took home the first ever county team title.

  • 2-TIME GROUP II STATE CHAMPION 440 YDS (1932 & ’33)

  • 4-TIME CJ SECTIONAL CHAMPION, BROAD JUMP (1932), 440 YDS (1933), BROAD JUMP & 220 YDS (1934)

  • 2-TIME MERCER COUNTY CHAMPION, BROAD JUMP & 220 YDS (1934)
